Noah and Tash´s speech outside the court house

Sept. 2, 2010 5:58 p.m.
Climate Collective

Here you can read Noah and Tash´s speech, given from the stairs of the court house a few minutes after the total aquittal.

Dear friends, family, and lovers. Today, after 48 collective days in jail, 8 months of waiting, and five days of trial, we are excited to announce our acquittal on all charges related to our arrests during the COP15. We would first like to thank our families, friends, and collective members for all of their wonderful support through this trying process. Their help and support has been invaluable and helped us to stay strong through these difficult times. We would also like to thank all of the people in copenhagen and abroad who have shown support and shown up to support us. Your support means a lot to us. Seriously, we could not have done it without all of you. We would of course also like to thank our kick ass legal team. We thank you both deeply for helping us get justice in court, and guiding us through this ordeal.

Today, we saw justice finally served in court, and a win for free speech and democracy. When deciding to demonstrate against the COP15 in december, we both wanted to shed light on the crisis of climate change, and challenge the elite's assertion that only they could solve the climate crisis. We believe that only people acting together, not corporations or governments, can effectively challenge the systems which have brought about the climate crisis, and bring real solutions which will stop the madness. With this as our rallying cry, we prepared to have our voices heard in the streets or copenhagen, and to demonstrate against the powerful elites of the world gathering for the COP15. While trying to reach these auspicious yet simple goals, we were met with severe repression by the state and the police. We have had our phones tapped and our homes raided. we have had our friends intimidated and our every movement watched. We have been arrested, thrown in jail, interrogated, threatened with deportation, and have had to endure the insecurity of trial and the so called justice system. While we are happy with the outcome today, we cannot say that we have emerged unscathed from this process.

We have had our lives turned upside down and our privacy violated all because the Authorities said they wanted to maintain public order. In reality, they wanted to protect the rich and powerful from having their parade rained on by those who disagreed with them. The status quo which the police have been deputized by the state to enforce, is one in which only the rich and powerful will be heard, while the people will have their voices suppressed through violence and intimidation on the part of the state. This story has been played out a thousand times before, and is still being played out in copenhagen and from the COP15. five people are still facing charges for trying to have their voices heard in December, and others are being repressed for their stance against fascism in this country. People every day have their freedom and voices repressed by the police and the state. While we may have won this day in court, the struggle continues for justice and equality for all.

While we are happy with the outcome today, we cannot say that we have not suffered in the process of reaching today. This has been hard on both us and the people we love. However, do not let the threat of repression keep you from organizing demonstrations and from taking action when you see injustice in the world. They will threaten us with intimidation, jail, and violence, but we cannot let their threats deter us from our struggle. We must see through their empty threats, for the truth is that our power is stronger then their fear. Together we can prevail.

To the people of denmark we say this. Be wary, as your government is quickly sliding down the road to a police state, and with it will go all of your liberties, freedom, and privacy. After having lived incarcerated and under surveillance, we tell you that this is no way to live a life. The police will tell you that it is for your own protection, and that you should have nothing to hide, but don't believe them for a second. They only seek to control you and protect the property of the rich. They will use this surveillance to make you all criminals. Fight this with all the power you have.

Thanks again to everyone for all their support! We are going to go celebrate, and we invite you all to come out for beers.
