Activists from the Nordic Climate Action Camp have blocked the Shell gas station in Simrishamn in a protest against Shells drillings for fossil gas!
July 19th, 2010
The activists took over the gas station in Simrishamn in the early afternoon with street theater, banners and homemade road blockades, to remind Shell that their destructive activities in Skåne will not pass by unnoticed. A fossil monster was greenwashed by businessmen and flyers was handed out, while a large banner saying ”Naturgas Naturlig Katastrof” decorated the roof of the gas station. The action took around two hours, where flyers and free food was handed out. Despite an indiscriminate and brutal arrest the activists left the station in a colorful demonstration of high spirits.
Shell have just finished the last test drillings for fossil gas in Skåne. If the results shows that there is enough gas in the underground, Shell will return to exploit gas from an area covering more than 20 % of Skåne's underground. The Nordic Climate Action Camp have one main goal: to stop Shells destructive drilling activities in the area. Shell is trying to convince the locals that the drillings will not have any negative consequences for the environment, but this is far from the truths. There is a large risk that the drillings will contaminate the groundwater in the area, while the burning of fossil gas is increasing the global warming. Therefore all new fossil exploitation need to be stopped. There is already a large local resistance against the drillings, and the activists from the camp hope that today's action will feed into the local resistance and increase the awareness about shells actions in the area.
